A CVV test error message means the payment gateway rejected the card verification value during a sandbox transaction. In test mode, this usually comes from one of three causes: a test card built to fail the CVC check, a CVV with the wrong digit count, or a form that submits an empty or stale value. Confirm the card number and digit count first, then check how your form passes the field to the gateway.

What the error message reports

Gateways return a decline code with a display message. The code is the part to trust, because the display text is often generic to stop card testing. A CVV failure may appear as "incorrect_cvc", "CVV mismatch", "security code invalid", or "card_declined" with a CVC sub-code. Log the code, not the CVV.

Common causes in test mode

  • The test card is designed to fail. Stripe's 4000 0000 0000 0127 returns incorrect_cvc on purpose.
  • The CVV length is wrong. American Express uses four digits; Visa, Mastercard, and Discover use three.
  • A live card's CVV is paired with a test card number, or the reverse.
  • Browser autofill fills the field with a saved value that does not match the test card.
  • Your server sends the CVV under the wrong parameter name, so the gateway receives an empty string.
  • The checkout form caches a prior value after you switch test cards.

Fix the error step by step

  1. Confirm the API keys and the card number both belong to test mode.
  2. Replace the card number with a known test card from your gateway's documentation.
  3. Enter a CVV that matches the card brand's digit count: three digits for Visa and Mastercard, four for American Express.
  4. Clear the CVV field and retype it by hand to override autofill.
  5. Inspect the request body in your gateway dashboard and confirm the CVC parameter carries a value.
  6. Retry the payment and read the decline code in the response, not the display message.
  7. If the code is still incorrect_cvc, switch to a test card that accepts any CVV and recheck your form mapping.

Test cards that trigger a CVV decline

  • 4000 0000 0000 0127 returns incorrect_cvc.
  • 4000 0000 0000 0101 returns a failed CVC check on the charge object.
  • 3782 822463 10005 is an American Express test card and requires a four-digit CID.

Handling CVV data correctly

PCI DSS forbids storing the CVV after authorization, so never write it to logs, databases, or analytics events. Send it once, let the gateway tokenize the card, and use the token for later charges. Error messages should reference the decline code only. This keeps test debugging safe and keeps production checkout compliant.
